A Life Shaped by Family, Experience, Grief, Healing, and Community.

Aniin!

I am a registered social worker with a Master of  Social Work degree (mental health focus), Bachelor of Social Work and Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Studies, which has given me the opportunity to understand the historical oppression of Indigenous peoples in Canada.  I am a certified grief educator trained by the grief expert David Kessler, who wrote several books on grief including Finding Meaning, which discusses importance of continuing bonds. I am dedicated to supporting individuals, families, and communities through healing, growth, and connection. My work is grounded in compassion, cultural safety, and the belief that every person has the capacity to reconnect with their strengths, resilience, and inner wisdom.

I aim to create a welcoming environment for people from all backgrounds, with an emphasis on culturally informed care, trauma-aware care that is person-centered.

My Journey

I am Nahkwe and grew up in Fishing Lake First Nation in Treaty 4 territory, Saskatchewan. I am a lifelong learner both in my experiences, in academic and through my personal growth and healing journey. I have been shaped by my experiences, family connections and believe my identity is rooted in my spirituality. I love to learn both western and Indigenous ways of knowing, but my greatest teachers have been Elders and community members. I have been shaped by their teachings and by their willingness to share our spirituality, importance of prayer and ceremony. I am and always will be on my healing journey and consider myself blessed to have the support of my children (Tristin, Thomas and my daughter Tegan who is in the spirit world).

I understand and know the depths of grief. In 2023, my ten-year-old daughter Tegan died unexpectedly due to a short illness. It was our traditional teachings and ways of knowing that allowed me to grieve in a good way and support my two sons through this loss. I have had several losses in my life including my father, brother, and sister at a young age. My early losses in life led me to seeking support through western therapeutic practices, and through our traditional ways of knowing, ceremonies, teaching from Elders, and community members. I never walked alone in grief and will continue to walk with others during my healing journey.

As a registered therapist grounded in Indigenous Ways of Knowing, I would like to support others as they begin or continue in their own healing journey. By fostering a safe space for healing, I walk alongside my clients towards emotional peace, ensuring that traditional values are respected and welcomed. Through this holistic lens, I hope to empower individuals to transform their pain into a journey of resilience and lasting spiritual wellness.

CULTURAL LEARNING

I was fortunate to be raised in a family and community that maintains our spirituality through customs, practice, prayer, and ceremony. As an adult, I always held my traditional beliefs, but did not always put them into practice. It was when I decided to take a position in my community, that I was given the opportunity to work with Elders. I was blessed to listen and learn from our communities Elders. They were willing to share their knowledge, our practices, protocols and the importance of connection to spirit. I spent years recording and listening to our Elders. It is because of their words, teachings, and encouragement, that my understanding of connection and spirit became my way of being.

I integrate principles (natural laws) into my practice, but do not impose my beliefs on any client. I strongly believe we must follow our own path and traditions. I will always follow the lead of my client and ensure that my intention is person-centered, guided by the path they choose to follow.
